I wish the ocean was smaller

a story of growing up with long distance parents

This children’s book is an introspective collection of childhood wishes I had while growing up with parents living on either side of the Atlantic Ocean. “The skyscrapers look like big hungry monsters. I wish I was as tough the London buildings.” I hope for the book to be a source of comfort, read by parents and children with similar experiences.

The book can be read as a traditional double-page spread, and can also fold out into a 4-metre long concertina - echoing the distance between two countries, which can feel even bigger from the vantage point of childhood. The visuals are made using linocut prints, reminiscent of drawings found in 6-year-old-me’s sketchbook.
